About Horicon
Horicon's Fascinating History
The marshland basin has been home to an abundant variety of fish, birds, and other wildlife for thousands of years, with evidence of human presence dating back 12,000 years3. The area became a haunt for early Native Americans, and white pioneers built a dam in 1846 to promote lumbering, transportation, and agriculture.
Horicon Museum
The museum is located in the former Satterlee Clark house. It was built in the 1850’s for the family of Mr. Clark, an attorney. He was active in local, county, and state politics for most of his life. The red bricks used to build the house came from the Chandler Brickyard; the first brickyard in Dodge County. Two other buildings on the museum grounds are a one-room schoolhouse, and a garage which houses antique farm equipment.

The Horicon Marsh provides a critical habitat for over 300 species of birds and supports the largest nesting population of redhead ducks east of the Mississippi River.
The Ledge Park is an opportune place to stay while visiting Mayville and exploring the Horicon Marsh. You can also visit the Horicon Marsh International Education Center, the Wild Goose State Trail and Gold Star Memorial Trail along with many other attractions in Mayville and Dodge County.
The Gold Star Trail
The Gold Star Trail is a non-motorized path connecting Mayville to the Horicon Marsh State Wildlife Area Visitors Center, honoring fallen service members and their families.
